Create and check an EAN barcode
Enter an EAN code. If the check digit is correct, we create the barcode as SVG or PNG. If you type 12 digits, we calculate the 13th digit.
The check digit is 6. The full code: 8712345678906
Issued by GS1 Netherlands
What you need an EAN code for
- Marketplaces: bol, Amazon, Zalando and Kaufland link your listings to the EAN. Without a valid code you often can’t sell.
- Fulfilment: a fulfilment company scans every product on receipt and when packing. That way the right item goes in the box. Products without a barcode get their own sticker there (often for a fee).
- Shops and wholesalers almost always work with EAN codes in their till and stock systems.
Frequently asked questions
Can I apply for an EAN code here?+
No. This tool creates the barcode (the bars) for a code you already have, and checks whether a code is correct. You buy an official EAN code (GTIN) for your own products from GS1, in the Netherlands via gs1.nl. Bol and Amazon check whether a code really belongs to your brand.
How does the check digit of an EAN code work?+
The last digit is a check digit. Multiply the digits before it alternately by 3 and 1, starting with 3 at the digit just before the check digit. Add everything up; the check digit is what you need to reach a multiple of ten. This lets a scanner catch typos.
Do I need an EAN code to sell on bol?+
Yes, bol requires a valid EAN for almost all products. If you sell a product that already exists, you use the manufacturer’s EAN. For your own brand you need your own codes from GS1.
What is the difference between EAN, GTIN and UPC?+
GTIN is the official name of the number. EAN-13 is the European form with 13 digits, UPC-A the American one with 12 digits (put a 0 in front and it’s a valid EAN-13). GTIN-14 is used on outer cartons.
How big should an EAN barcode be?+
The standard size is 37.3 × 25.9 mm (100%). GS1 allows 80% to 200%. Smaller is hard to scan. Leave a white margin on the left and right and print black on white.
