Frequently asked questions
What is a loading metre?+
A loading metre (ldm) is one metre of loading floor across the full width of a truck or trailer, about 2.40 metres. A standard trailer is 13.60 metres long, so 13.6 loading metres. Carriers often charge part loads per loading metre.
How do you calculate loading metres?+
Loading metres = length × width (in metres) / 2.4. A Euro pallet of 1.20 × 0.80 m is 0.96 / 2.4 = 0.4 ldm. A block pallet of 1.20 × 1.00 m is 0.5 ldm. If you can stack pallets, divide by the number of layers.
How many pallets fit in a truck?+
A standard 13.6-metre trailer fits 33 Euro pallets (three side by side) or 26 block pallets (two side by side) on the floor. A rigid truck is shorter; ask the carrier about the loading floor.
When does a carrier charge per loading metre and when per kilo?+
For light, bulky loads the carrier usually charges per loading metre, for heavy loads per kilo. Many carriers use a conversion of about 1,650 to 1,850 kg per loading metre; you then pay for whichever comes out higher. Ask your carrier about their rule.
